Warning signs at a casting

In the film and TV industry, the selection process is the first real contact between a production and the talent. Yet disorder and poor communication are often accepted as «part of the job».
At Alicante Light Film, we are launching our series of tips with actress Lidia Mínguez, who raises a much-needed question: how can you tell whether a casting is well or badly organised?
Lidia, whose work includes series such as 4 Estrellas and films such as La Navidad en sus manos, points out that a project’s professionalism shows from the very first email. One of the most common complaints in the industry is the lack of feedback when participants have questions. If a production cannot answer basic questions about the character or the sides, it is a clear sign of poor management.
The «red flags» in selection
In her talk, Lidia identifies several critical points that undermine the film ecosystem:
- Unjustified date changes: an actor’s diary is their working tool. Constant last-minute changes without clear communication show a lack of respect for the professional’s commitment.
- Poor logistics: a chaotic casting process is usually the prelude to a difficult shoot.
- The information vacuum: no answers after the selection stages means the actor cannot close that chapter and move on.
Towards a healthier industry in Alicante
We stand for transparent, human selection processes. We believe a well-run casting not only benefits the director but creates the climate of trust an actor needs to give their best.
As Lidia Mínguez points out, learning to spot these signs is essential for local talent to value their time and professional energy.
